For weeks, Meena seemed to be slipping away. She became completely withdrawn, often tearful, and highly irritable. She stopped cooking, began missing days at work, and tossed and turned all night. At first, her husband Suresh did not understand what was happening. Viewing her behaviour as a choice, he assumed she was just being difficult or lazy. Frustration built up, and their home became a stressful environment of constant arguments.

The turning point came when Suresh took the time to read about the symptoms of clinical depression. Suddenly, a lightbulb went on. He realised that his wife was not fighting him—she was fighting a severe, exhausting illness.

He changed his approach completely. Instead of starting another argument about the undone chores, he sat down and spoke to her gently: "I see you are suffering. I am on your side. Let us go talk to a doctor together." Because she finally felt seen and supported rather than judged, the defensive wall dropped, and Meena agreed to get help.

With proper medical treatment, the heavy fog slowly began to lift. But the true foundation of her recovery was built at home. Suresh took an active role in the healing process. He learned to simply listen to her without instantly judging or trying to "fix" her thoughts. He took over the household tasks to give her physical space to rest, helped her manage her daily medicines, and even joined a family support group to educate himself further.

The Core Lesson

Suresh learned one of the most important lessons for any family facing mental illness. When we do not understand an illness, we easily mistake its symptoms, such as sudden irritability, lack of interest and deep tiredness, for a bad attitude or weak character. Once Suresh understood the illness, he stopped seeing Meena as an opponent and became her strongest support.
