Psychology for Everyone

Isha Upanishad 1

All this is inhabited by the Lord. Enjoy by letting go. Do not covet anyone's wealth.

ईशावास्यमिदं सर्वं यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत् ।
तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा मा गृधः कस्यस्विद्धनम् ॥

isavasyam idam sarvam yat kinca jagatyam jagat |
tena tyaktena bhunjitha ma grdhah kasya svid dhanam ||

All this is inhabited by the Lord. Enjoy by letting go. Do not covet anyone's wealth.

In modern mental health, chronic anxiety is very often driven by our desperate need to control and possess things, status, or specific outcomes. This famous verse introduces the profound psychological tool of aparigraha (non-possessiveness). It teaches that true enjoyment of life only happens when you stop gripping it so tightly. But there is an important limit. Letting go is an inner attitude that reduces anxiety; it does not mean giving up your responsibilities. Non-attachment does not stop you earning a fair wage for your family, and it is never a reason to stop prescribed treatment or refuse a doctor's care.
