Knowledge, Humility And What Follows — Hitopadesha

Knowledge gives humility; from humility comes worthiness; from worthiness comes wealth; from wealth comes dharma; and from dharma comes happiness.

विद्या ददाति विनयं विनयाद्याति पात्रताम् । पात्रत्वाद्धनमाप्नोति धनाद्धर्मं ततः सुखम् ॥

vidya dadati vinayam vinayad yati patratam | patratvad dhanam apnoti dhanad dharmam tatah sukham ||
How to say it: vid-YAA da-DAA-ti vi-na-YAM, vi-na-YAAD yaa-ti paa-tra-TAAM. paa-tra-TVAAD dha-nam aap-NO-ti, dha-NAAD dhar-mam ta-TAH su-kham.

Knowledge gives humility; from humility comes worthiness; from worthiness comes wealth; from wealth comes dharma; and from dharma comes happiness.

Here wealth is the result of learning and not its price. The order matters: first humility, then fitness for a task, then livelihood, then right use, then peace. A person who is paid for service is not a seller of knowledge; the tradition separates a livelihood honestly earned from a sacred teaching put on a counter.
