The afflictions are ignorance, I-making, attachment, aversion, and clinging to life.

The afflictions are ignorance, I-making, attachment, aversion, and clinging to life.

These five kleshas (afflictions) are the deep roots of human suffering. When you experience a severe shock or trauma, your mind often gets trapped in the last two: dvesha (a powerful urge to avoid anything that reminds you of the pain) and abhinivesha (a deep, panicky clinging to survival). After a difficult blow, this intense avoidance and survival-panic can keep your nervous system inflamed and on high alert for months or even years. Naming these reactions is the first step, as it helps you realise that your mind is simply trying to protect you. However, ancient lists are not a substitute for modern medical care. Do not use this verse as an excuse to skip seeing a trauma-trained clinician when your nervous system is genuinely overwhelmed.
